FAQs
Should I choose a plug-in or hardwire installation for my charger?
Both installation options are available. The standard NEMA 14-50 plug supports up to 40A of current, while the hardwire installation supports up to 48A.
To help determine which setup works best for you, we recommend checking the capacity of your vehicle’s onboard charger.
For example: the 2024 Nissan Leaf has an onboard charger capacity of 6.6kW = 27.5 Amps. Using a NEMA 14-50 plug and setting the charger’s current to 32-amps would allow you to get the maximum output for your vehicle without the need for a hardwired connection.
Can I just get any NEMA 14-50 outlet installed for my charger?
We recommend you use a commercial/industrial grade NEMA 14-50 outlet that is rated for EV charging. These are built with better materials and can support continuous loads – which is the case for EV charging.
It is essential to comply with the National Electric Code (NEC) guidelines for the NEMA installations. The charger’s amperage must not exceed 80% of the circuit breaker’s capacity or 40A, whichever is lower.
Do I have to use a specific type of junction box when hardwiring my charger?
No. You can use a regular junction-box to hardwire the charger.
If I hardwire my unit, what type of wire should I use?
Use 6 AWG THHN or 4 AWG copper wires from the junction box to the circuit breaker.
What circuit breaker do I need for my EV charger?
NEMA plug installation: Requires a 50A dedicated circuit breaker with GFCI protection and offers a maximum output of 40A.
Hardwire installation: Requires a 60A dedicated circuit breaker (no GFCI needed) which allows the maximum output of 48A.
Please adhere to the NEC recommendations to charge at 80% of circuit breaker capacity.
Can I remove the NEMA plug to hardwire the charger?
Yes. Snapping the plug off and using a junction box to hardwire the charger is our engineers’ formal recommendation. Always consult a licensed electrician for a safe installation.
For detailed instructions, refer to our Hardwiring Guide found in our User Manuals section or contact us at support@apexcharger.com.

Is a GFCI breaker required if I’m hardwiring the charger?
No. A GFCI breaker is not required for hardwire installations.
A junction box should be used as a heatsink for hardwire installations.
How do I adjust the amperage on my charger?
The amperage can be adjusted via the Smart Life app or directly on the charger itself, depending on your preference.
- Smart Life App: From the charger’s home screen (Charging pile) go to Settings then click on Charging current.
- Directly on the charger: Press the Current button (Mach 1/Mach 3) or the A button (Mach 2) to toggle through the preset current options until you reach the desired one.
What’s the best way to manage my charger’s cable?
For optimal cable management, use the cable/wall holder to prevent it form tangling or wear.
What’s the difference between changing the amperage on the app vs. on the charger itself?
There is no functional difference between changing the amperage through the app or directly on the charger. Choose the method that is most convenient for you.
What certifications and safety features do your chargers have?
Both the MACH 1 and MACH 2 models are ETL certified to meet UL Standard 2594:2022 Ed.3 and CSA Standard C22.2#280.2022 Ed.3.
These certifications were issued by Intertek, one of the most reputable testing laboratories in the US.
